Roger Dubuis Excalibur Carbon Skeleton RDDBEX0777

Modern Haute Horlogerie for the Collector Ready to Move Beyond the Obvious

The Roger Dubuis Excalibur is at its most compelling when the movement, case, and design become inseparable from one another. Reference RDDBEX0777 pairs the architectural RD820SQ skeleton movement with a lightweight 42 millimeter carbon case, turning the mechanics of the watch into its visual identity rather than hiding them behind a conventional dial.

This 2020 example originally retailed for $68,000 and is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, warranty document, certificate, user manual, and document holder. At $38,000, it offers access to an unusually high level of contemporary haute horlogerie, Geneva finishing standards, and distinctive design at a substantial step below its original retail positioning.

Condition

The watch is running well and remains in great overall condition. The crystal presents well, with the possibility of an extremely faint hairline mark in the anti reflective coating that may only become visible under close inspection or specific lighting.

The carbon case, DLC coated titanium caseback and crown, black rubber strap with red stitching, and DLC coated steel double folding clasp all present well overall. The inner presentation box and watch roll show minor signs of wear but continue to present nicely.

Please review the photos carefully, as they form part of the description and accurately represent both the watch and accompanying accessories.

Why We Like It

Roger Dubuis occupies a particularly interesting place in modern watchmaking. The manufacture built its identity around highly expressive design without abandoning the traditional movement finishing and construction standards associated with serious Geneva watchmaking. The Excalibur is perhaps the clearest expression of that philosophy.

In the RD820SQ, skeletonization is not simply used to expose a movement sitting beneath the dial. The movement effectively becomes the dial. The bridges, wheels, gear train, and signature star shaped architecture form the visual composition of the watch, creating depth that changes constantly depending on viewing angle and light.

Then there is the Poinçon de Genève, or Geneva Seal. That certification is especially important here because it gives substance to a watch that could otherwise be judged only by its dramatic appearance. The Excalibur may look thoroughly contemporary, but its movement is rooted in traditional Geneva standards for construction and finishing. That tension between avant garde design and classical haute horlogerie is a major part of what makes Roger Dubuis interesting.

The carbon case reinforces the same idea. Rather than communicating luxury through the weight of precious metal, Roger Dubuis uses an advanced lightweight material that allows the architecture and mechanics to remain the focus. At 42 millimeters, it has strong presence without becoming unnecessarily heavy or oversized.

This is also why the Excalibur tends to speak to a more experienced collector. It often becomes interesting after the familiar milestones have already been checked off, when recognition matters less and individuality, engineering, finishing, and design begin to matter more.

Being less obvious is part of the appeal.
