A Bronze Aquatimer Designed to Show Its Age

The Expedition Charles Darwin is one of the more distinctive Aquatimers IWC has produced, pairing the capability of a 300-meter dive watch with a bronze case designed to change appearance as it's worn.

That's especially relevant with this example. Over time, the bronze developed a substantial natural patina from wear and exposure. A watchmaker carefully cleaned the exterior to remove the heavier accumulation while preserving the warmer, naturally aged character underneath. The result presents beautifully without trying to make a nearly decade-old bronze watch look artificially new.

It's fitted to its black rubber strap with bronze clasp and includes its box, inner travel roll, 2016 warranty card, and warranty booklet.

Condition

The bronze case presents beautifully, with remaining natural patina adding character throughout. When the watch arrived, the patina was considerably heavier from years of wear. A watchmaker carefully cleaned the exterior to reduce the heavier accumulation while preserving the naturally aged appearance of the bronze.

Localized surface wear and discoloration remain around the perimeter of the crystal and are shown clearly in the close-up photographs. The bezel rotates smoothly with no grinding, binding, or difficulty.

The watch is running well. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description and accurately represent the watch and accompanying accessories.

Included With Watch

Included with the watch are the box, inner travel roll, warranty card, warranty booklet, IWC black rubber strap, and bronze clasp.

Why We Like It

The Charles Darwin Aquatimer is a watch where the choice of material is inseparable from the idea behind it.

IWC created the edition as a tribute to Charles Darwin and his voyages of exploration aboard HMS Beagle. Instead of conventional stainless steel, IWC chose bronze—a material with longstanding maritime associations and, importantly, one that naturally reacts with its environment.

That means every example evolves differently. Exposure to air, moisture, and everyday wear gradually changes the surface of the bronze, creating the patina that makes the material so appealing to many collectors. On a watch conceived around exploration, that aging feels particularly appropriate.

This example demonstrates that quality especially well. Its heavier accumulated patina was carefully reduced, but the bronze hasn't been stripped of its history. Warm tonal variation remains throughout the case, giving it the character of a watch that has actually aged rather than one trying to imitate the appearance.

There's plenty of substance underneath the theme. The 44 millimeter case offers 300 meters of water resistance, while IWC's SafeDive system combines an externally operated bezel with an internal dive-time scale. It preserves the cleaner appearance of an internal timing bezel while retaining the intuitive operation expected from a purpose-built dive watch.

Inside is IWC's Caliber 89365 automatic chronograph with approximately 68 hours of power reserve. Its chronograph display is unusually clean, consolidating elapsed timing into a single totalizer rather than filling the dial with multiple registers.

The combination gives this Aquatimer a very specific personality: large, mechanical, maritime, and deliberately built from a material that isn't supposed to remain visually unchanged.

For someone who enjoys watches that develop evidence of where they've been, the patina isn't something to hide. It's part of what makes this particular Charles Darwin interesting.
