Source This WatchA Manufacture Monopusher Chronograph Hiding in Plain Sight
The Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph is one of those watches that's easy to underestimate until you understand what's happening on the dial. Rather than using a conventional chronograph layout, Montblanc built the watch around two rotating discs at 6 o'clock, translating the unusual architecture of Nicolas Rieussec's early 19th-century chronograph into a distinctly modern display.
Behind it sits the manufacture Caliber MB R200, an automatic monopusher chronograph with a column wheel, vertical clutch, twin barrels, approximately 72 hours of power reserve, and a second time-zone display. It's an unusually serious mechanical package for a watch that remains relatively under the radar.
This 2020 example presents in excellent overall condition with little to no visible wear. It comes on its stainless steel bracelet, currently accommodating wrists up to approximately 7.25 inches, and includes its inner presentation box and dated warranty book.

Why We Like It
The Nicolas Rieussec is a good reminder that some of the most interesting watches aren't necessarily the ones with the most obvious name on the dial. Its story begins with Nicolas Rieussec, whose early 19th-century chronograph used rotating discs and a fixed marker to record elapsed time. Rather than simply attaching his name to a conventional chronograph, Montblanc turned those rotating counters into the defining visual element of the watch.
The movement is what elevates the concept beyond clever design. The MB R200 was developed around this unusual display and combines an automatic monopusher chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch—features associated with considerably more sophisticated chronograph construction. Twin barrels provide approximately 72 hours of power reserve, while a second time zone and date add genuine everyday functionality.
In other words, this isn't an ordinary automatic movement sitting behind an interesting dial. The mechanics and design were conceived to work together.
That becomes particularly compelling on the secondary market. Originally positioned at approximately $11,000, the Nicolas Rieussec offered the kind of manufacture movement architecture expected from a serious mechanical chronograph. At $5,500 today, it's difficult to find the same combination of an automatic monopusher chronograph, column wheel, vertical clutch, dual-time functionality, distinctive display, and 72-hour reserve anywhere near the price.
This probably isn't the watch for someone buying primarily for instant brand recognition. It's for the collector who enjoys discovering serious watchmaking that others may overlook.
And that's precisely where the Nicolas Rieussec becomes interesting: there's a surprising amount of watch here for the money.
