Vintage GP Weirdness, Brought Back Properly

The Deep Diver is a great example of Girard-Perregaux reaching into its archives without simply recreating an old watch. Inspired by the brand's Deep Diver references from around the turn of the 1970s, this collaboration with Bamford Watch Department preserves the compact cushion-shaped case and unmistakably retro character, then rebuilds the concept in lightweight Grade 5 titanium with a much bolder personality.

Orange, blue, and white shouldn't necessarily be subtle, but somehow the combination works here. It gives the watch a playful, almost retro-futuristic quality, while an internal rotating dive bezel, 200 meters of water resistance, and Girard-Perregaux's automatic GP03300 give the design real substance.

This example has remained unworn since leaving the AD and carries a warranty card dated May 2025. Both orange and blue rubber straps are included, along with its boxes, warranty card, literature, hangtag, and accompanying accessories.

Why We Like It

The Deep Diver is the kind of watch that makes more sense once you realize Girard-Perregaux actually has history here. Long before the modern luxury dive-watch category became crowded, GP was producing distinctive divers of its own. Its vintage Deep Diver designs combined compact cushion-shaped cases with the colorful, unconventional styling that immediately identifies them with their era.

For this modern interpretation, Girard-Perregaux didn't try to hide those origins.

The case remains unusually compact at 40.3 × 38 millimeter, but it is now constructed from Grade 5 titanium. An internal rotating dive bezel and 200 meters of water resistance give it modern sports-watch capability without sacrificing the proportions and character that make the design interesting in the first place.

Then there's Bamford.

Rather than turning the collaboration into an all-black reinterpretation or simply changing a few details on an existing GP, Bamford leaned directly into the personality of the original Deep Diver. The orange, white, and blue palette feels almost deliberately period-correct while looking unlike much else in today's dive-watch landscape. The typography, cushion case, internal bezel, and dial architecture all contribute to its slightly retro-futuristic personality.

Inside is Girard-Perregaux's automatic GP03300 with approximately 46 hours of power reserve. That's an important part of the proposition. The vintage inspiration is primarily visual; underneath it remains a modern mechanical watch from a manufacture with considerable watchmaking depth.

Production was limited to just 350 pieces worldwide, making this considerably more interesting than an unusual color variation within a large collection. It's a genuinely small-production collaboration built around a part of Girard-Perregaux's history that receives far less attention than the Laureato or the manufacture's more complicated pieces.

Having both straps also matters more here than it might on a conventional watch. Orange pushes the already playful design even further, while blue changes the balance and gives the watch a somewhat more restrained appearance. Both were conceived as part of the original package, so the owner gets two distinct ways to lean into the personality of the watch.

This probably isn't the diver for someone looking for the safest or most recognizable choice. It's for the collector who has already seen plenty of those and wants something genuinely different—with legitimate history and manufacture watchmaking behind the eccentricity.
